Your obligations

The Commission's Act places obligations on applicants and card holders.

Failure to comply with these obligations may attract penalties.

Change in personal information

You must advise the Commission of:

  • any move or change to your postal address
  • a new telephone or contact number, or
  • a change of name.

Change in employment circumstances / changing or ceasing your business

You must advise the Commission:

  • if you are no longer working with an organisation or company
  • if you are starting new child-related work (either on a paid or voluntary basis) with a different employer, education provider or organisation, or
  • if you commence or cease studies in a child-related area.

If you operate a regulated, child-related business, you must advise the Commission:

  • if you cease to operate your regulated child-related business
  • if you change the contact details for your business, or
  • if you change the nature or type of regulated child-related services offered by your business.

Please note, if you hold a volunteer or student blue card (for which you have not paid a fee) and you propose to move into paid employment or to commence a regulated child-related business, you must complete the appropriate transfer form and pay the prescribed fee.

You will be issued with a new card with an additional three years validity from the date of issue.

Lost or stolen cards

You must advise the Commission if your blue card or exemption card is lost or stolen within 14 days and pay a fee for a replacement card.

Renewing your blue card

A positive notice and blue card is valid for three years. If you wish to continue in regulated employment, you will need to renew your blue card before it expires. You must:

  • lodge a renewal form with the Commission before it's expiry date. Once we have have received your application, you can continue to work while we are processing your blue card renewal.

Please note, exemption cards do not have an expiry date and remain valid as long as the card holder remains a registered teacher or police officer in Queensland.

Change in police information

The Commission constantly monitors your police information. If a relevant change occurs that might affect your eligibility to work with children, then your application or status as a card holder will be reassessed.

You must immediately notify the Commission and your employer if there is a change in your police information. Please click here for more information about what is considered police information.

Please note that you do not have to provide the details of any offence/s to your employer, only that a change has occurred.

Suspension of blue card or exemption card

If your blue card or exemption card is suspended you must not:

  • apply for or start in regulated employment, or
  • continue work that is regulated employment, or
  • start or continue to carry on a regulated business.

You must return your positive notice letter and blue card to the Commission within seven days.

Once the charge is finalised in court and your eligibility to hold a card is re-assessed, you and your employer/volunteer organisation/education provider (if applicable) will be notified of the outcome of the re-assessment (i.e. whether your card is continued or the suspended card is cancelled and a negative notice is issued).

Cancellation of blue card or exemption card

If your blue card or exemption card is cancelled you must not:

  • apply for or start in regulated employment, or
  • continue work that is regulated employment, or
  • start or continue to carry on a regulated business.

You must return your positive notice letter and blue card to the Commission immediately.

Risk management strategies

All regulated child-related businesses must have a documented child and youth risk management strategy.
