Security guards

I am a security guard at a shopping centre or other general facility. Do I need a blue card?

No.

Providing security services to the general public at a shopping centre or other public venue is not regulated by the Commission's Act and we are unable to screen individuals for this type of work.

I am a security guard that provides security services at school functions (such as dances or camps). Do I need a blue card?

Yes.

Under the 'schools - employees other than teachers and parents' category of regulated employment, paid employees need a blue card if their work at a school includes, or is likely to include, providing services directed mainly towards children, or conducting activities that mainly involve children, for at least:

  • eight consecutive days, or
  • once a week, each week, over four weeks, or
  • once a fortnight, each fortnight, over eight weeks, or
  • once a month, each month, over six months

unless an exemption applies.

You can apply for a blue card by submitting a 'Paid employee (P) application' form (PDF, 294KB) and selecting the 'schools - employees other than teachers and parents' category of regulated employment.

Please note, as a paid employee you can commence child-related work after you have lodged your blue card application with the Commission.

I am a security guard that visits a child care centre or school outside operating hours when there are no children present. Do I need a blue card?

No. If you are providing services after hours and not while child care is being provided, you do not require a blue card.

However, if you do visit the child care centre while child care is being provided, you will need a blue card if you meet the following time frames:

  • eight consecutive days, or
  • once a week, each week, over four weeks, or
  • once a fortnight, each fortnight, over eight weeks, or
  • once a month, each month, over six months

unless an exemption applies.

You can apply for a blue card by submitting a 'Paid employee (P) application' form (PDF, 294KB) and selecting the 'child care' category of regulated employment.

Please note, as a paid employee you can commence child-related work after you have lodged your blue card application with the Commission.

If you operate your own security business, you can apply for a blue card by submitting a 'Business (B) application' form (PDF, 295KB) and selecting the 'child care' category of regulated business.

Please note, as a business operator you must not commence child-related work until after you have received a blue card.
