Children & young people

What does the blue card system do for me?

The blue card system works to create safe environments for children and young people by:

  • checking a person's known police and disciplinary information before they can work with children and young people, and
  • working with organisations to help make sure children and young people are safe and happy when they are there.

What you can expect...

You should feel:

  • safe and protected at all times
  • involved in decisions that affect you, and
  • happy

when you are receiving services or participating in a range of activities. This might include:

  • when you are in child care or being looked after by another adult
  • when you are receiving medical, health or counselling services
  • when you participate in sporting teams or other social, cultural and recreational activities, or
  • when you participate in church groups or other religious activities.

What to do if you don't feel safe or are worried about something...

All children and young people have a right to feel protected and safe, no matter where they are or who they are with. You have a right to feel safe at all times.

  • If you are in immediate danger or feel scared please call the police on 000.
  • If you are worried about something, or something doesn't feel right, you can try speaking to a parent, a teacher or another adult that you trust.
  • If you are worried you might get in trouble and would like to talk to someone you don't know who can help you, try calling Kids Help Line on 1800 55 1800.

Your opinions matter!

So that organisations and people who work with children can meet your needs, the Commission encourages adults to listen to children and young people so that they are included in decisions that might affect them.

If you have an idea about how something can be better at your school or somewhere else like at a sporting club or social group that you participate in, you have the right to let people know how you feel and what your ideas are.

  • Try talking to an adult in charge about your ideas or if you are worried or have an opinion about a decision that might affect you, or
  • Speak to your parents or teachers and let them know how you feel.
