Do I need a blue card?

People who work in child care services or similar employment, or who provide other regulated services in an environment where child care is being provided, must hold a blue card or an exemption card to comply with the requirements of the Commission's Act and the Child Care Act 2002.

Adult occupants of a home in which a stand alone care service is being provided can apply for a blue card/ exemption card as a volunteer. Volunteers are required to hold a blue card prior to the stand alone carer commencing their stand alone care service.

Important things to remember

Blue cards for are valid for three years.

The prescribed application fee for business and paid employee blue cards is $73.45

There is no application fee for volunteers and trainee students.

Certain people are prohibited from applying for a blue card. Please click here for more information about disqualified persons.

Police officers and registered teachers do not apply for blue cards and in certain circumstances may need to apply for an exemption card. Please click here for the relevant exemption card application forms.

Please check all categories that might apply to your staff. If they don't require screening under one category, they might still need screening under another.
