Our role

Our mandate
The Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian promotes and protect the rights, interests and wellbeing of children and young people in Queensland, particularly those who:

  • are in care or detention
  • have no one to act on their behalf
  • are not able to protect themselves
  • are disadvantaged because of a disability, geographic isolation, homelessness or poverty.

Our work contributes to protecting and promoting the safety and wellbeing of Queensland children.

Our vision
A better life for Queensland children and young people, particularly our most vulnerable.

Our mission
To improve the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable children and young people in Queensland.

Our independence
The Commission is an independent statutory body established under the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act 2000. The Commissioner’s operations and decisions must be independent of any Ministers, government departments or other agencies.

The Commission has an oversight role of the child safety and youth justice systems. The Commission works collaboratively with both government and non-government agencies to resolve matters impacting on the best interests of children and young people.
